First Black Female American Governor?

Stacey Abrams vs Brian Kemp for Governor of Georgia. Republicans win state-wide elections in the US South. Or do they?

Doug Jones beat Roy Moore for Senator of Alabama. Roy Moore was of course very much damaged goods. Enough typical Republican voters were either turned off and didn’t vote, or flipped to Democratic to make a statement. And more than usual Democratic voters showed up knowing they might pull it off. And history was made in Alabama!

So what about Georgia now? Georgia has already grown closer to not being solid Republican. Brian Kemp may not be Roy Moore, but he has went hard right and acted like Trump. And that certainly does turn off many typical Republican voters. But is that enough in Georgia? If that was all, it probably would not be enough in 2018.

But what about Stacey Abrams? She may very well prove to be the difference, as Stacey Abrams is no Doug Jones. I don’t mean any offense, but my understanding is that he was nothing special – he was just the anti-Moore. Stacey Abrams however is exciting! She has plenty of charisma, experience, intelligence, and integrity.

She is also a black woman! That really shouldn’t matter, but men and women are both fed up with men. And there is something “cool” about the possible history Stacey Abrams could become America’s First Black Female Governor! So it is very possible she has what it takes to get more than enough to flip and show up to make it so!

White Heterosexual Male Privilege

I was taking a quick survey the other day for Google Play dollars, and I nearly answered the first question wrong. It was the simple what is your gender question. Why / how would I nearly get that wrong? The first response was female and the second was male!

That’s right, I am so privileged as a white heterosexual male that I automatically assume the first response to a gender question will of course be male! I know this is probably a silly example, but it really hit home with me – and I already knew I was quite privileged!

Being privileged is exactly so used to having your way that you don’t even realize it could be any other way. And its pretty much the definition that you cannot know you are that privileged until someone that is not points it out. We can only catch glimmers at times!

Do The People Get to Decide Again?

The last time we had a Supreme court vacancy it was 4 1/2 months farther out to the next election than it is this time. And we were told that it was best to wait for that next election so the people’s voice could be heard. Never mind there was no precedent for that because it was apparently just the right thing to do. Will we stick to that this time also – the next election is much closer, so it seems fair!

The country is changing, and it has been for a very long time. But some things don’t change. Like those being in power with the most to lose finding ways to change the rules. Or the voting lists or district lines. And most things just don’t have the moral clarity like separating children to get enough “normal” people to speak up. But the rest of us at least will be learning to no longer stay quiet!

Love the Christian but Hate the Religion

I was surprised to see this Facebook comment: “You are disgusting and your behavior is disgusting”. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised about any comments on Facebook. But this was from a pastor’s wife! And one in my family, which is why I saw it.

Its hard for me to understand why a pastor’s wife would ever say “You are disgusting”! I was under the impression we were to love the sinner even if we hate the sin. So maybe there’s a possibility to say “your behavior is disgusting”, although I’m not sure about that either, but “you are disgusting”?

Please know that I don’t think its right for anyone to say such a thing, so I’m not excusing non-Christians nor non-pastors. I was just still naive enough to hope that a pastor’s wife would not sink to such disparaging remarks. I should have known better though, as I have enough history with both pastors and family.

I opened the Facebook post with the comment on it and then realized it wasn’t even a recent post – it was over a year old. And there were hundreds, if not thousands, of newly made disparaging comments on this and many many other of their posts from “Christians”!

I suspect I’ve accidentally led you to believe this was the Facebook page of a pedophile – but no! This was the Facebook page of a business that simply asked someone to leave that they disagreed with politically. Maybe they should not have done that, but really?

These same people have made the argument that they should be able to deny service to those they don’t agree with. But when its the other way around they are appalled – and go out of their way to troll a Facebook page with thousands of disparaging comments!

My understanding is that you can totally discriminate based on politics, but I’m not trying to excuse that either. I was just still naive enough to have been shocked to find a pastor’s wife, in my family, taking the time to post “you are disgusting” to anyone!

I still don’t think this family member is “disgusting”. But I do think her behavior is disgusting! I’m finding it hard to love the Christian while hating the religion!
